As a Verb or Adjective: 1. To stand or point straight up and down. English = (be) vertical. 2. In geometry, of a line, to intersect another line at right angles. English = (be) perpendicular. Note: 1. Two of the variant signs use initialisation and were created for use in education. One uses the V handshape (for ‘vertical’) and one uses the P handshape (in the one-handed alphabet) for ‘perpendicular’. They have been accepted and used as Auslan signs by some deaf people, especially in educational contexts by teachers of the deaf, their students, and interpreters. However, the main sign and the other variant can also be used with both meanings.
